Luke 3:14 (ESV)

Soldiers also asked him, 'And we, what shall we do?' And he said to them, 'Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your wages.'

Talk About It

Do you ever look at what other people have and wish you had more? In today’s verse, people went to John the Baptist and asked, “What should we do to live in a way that makes God happy?” John answered by telling them not to take things that don’t belong to them and not to try to get more than what is fair. He said, “Be content with your wages,” which means to be satisfied with what you have. Many people—then and now—think having more money or the newest toys will make them happy. But the Bible teaches us that real happiness comes from knowing God is always with us. No matter how much we have, it isn’t “stuff” that fills our hearts, but God’s presence and love. It sometimes takes real strength to be thankful for what we already have, especially when life feels hard or when we see others get more. Instead of chasing after more, God wants us to trust Him and share what we do have. When we remember He will take care of us, we can feel content and even share with others!

For Parents to Explain

Dear God, thank You for being with us and giving us all we really need. Help us to be thankful and happy with what we have, and to remember that You are enough for us. Amen.

Family Activities

Gratitude Scavenger Hunt

  1. Each family member picks 5 things in your home they are thankful for; write or draw them on a piece of paper.
  2. Share the items and say why you are grateful for them.
  3. After everyone shares, thank God for providing these things.
  4. Talk about how remembering small blessings helps us feel content.

Needs vs. Wants Sort

  1. Gather magazines or draw pictures of things you want and things you need (like food, toys, clothes, games).
  2. Make two columns labeled “Needs” and “Wants.”
  3. Sort each picture or drawing into the correct column together.
  4. Discuss how God promises to give us what we need, and how what we want isn't always most important.

Family Prayer

Let’s each thank God for something we have. Ask Him to help you feel thankful and content today.
